Stay Stay Stay (Taylor’s Version) is the most confusing song on Red. In the lyrics, Taylor paints a picture of a relationship that’s not ideal. But the couple stays together because it’s just easier than breaking up.

Her hidden message in the song was “daydreaming about real love,” so what does this song tell us about Taylor’s idea of what true love is?

The secret message in the original liner notes for Stay Stay Stay was “Daydreaming about real love.” This provides some important context for the song. 

The rest of the Red album is about breaking up and losing love, and this song is no exception. 

Though on the surface it looks like a love song, it’s not. It’s about settling for an imperfect love, and about being with someone because you have no other choice. 

Who is Stay Stay Stay About? 

Stay Stay Stay is not about a real relationship – it’s a dream or a fantasy about finding true love, and what that really means. It’s a satire about a “perfect” relationship.  

What is Stay Stay Stay About?

Stay Stay Stay is a satirical take on finding true love. In it, Taylor portrays a relationship that’s less than perfect: her two protagonists don’t really understand each other. But they stay together because it’s ‘good enough.’ 

They’re settling for each other instead of finding someone who really fits.

The first verse opens with the couple on the edge of a breakup. Taylor (either as herself, or as the protagonist character) threw her phone at him; this is an act of violence and abuse.

She expects he’ll leave after that, with “some dramatic turn away”, but he stays. 

The next morning she wants to chat about what happened, because she “read you should never leave a fight unresolved.” Note that she doesn’t want to talk to patch things up – she wants to talk because that’s what you’re ‘supposed’ to do.

He comes in, prepared for a metaphorical and/or physical battle wearing a football helmet. 

They begin the conversation.

Chorus: “You Think It’s Funny When I’m Mad”

She begs him to “stay, stay, stay.” She’s been “loving” (note: not in love, but “loving”) him for quite some “time, time, time.” 

Why the 3x repeat of “time”? For emphasis. They’ve been together a while. 

But he thinks it’s “funny when I’m mad, mad, mad.” Again, the repetition emphasizes how mad she is, and how mad it makes her that he thinks her emotions are funny.

This is a huge red flag. So why is Taylor telling us this? 

We find out in the final line of the chorus: “but I think that it’s best if we both stay.” She lists their myriad of positives and negatives, and concludes that they should just settle for each other. 

Verse 2: “Self-Indulgent Takers”

The second verse and chorus reads: "Before you, I'd only dated self-indulgent takers Who took all of their problems out on me But you carry my groceries and now I'm always laughing And I love you because you have given me No choice but to stay, stay, stay I've been loving you for quite some time, time, time You think that it's funny when I'm mad, mad, mad But I think that it's best if we both stay, stay, stay, stay"

Verse 2 expands on her past. Before, she’d only “dated self-indulgent takers who took all of their problems out on” her. But is he any better? 

Sure, he carries her “groceries and now” she’s “always laughing.” But carrying the groceries and making someone laugh is the bare minimum someone should do in a relationship. Where is this going? 

The next lines are the most telling: “I love you because you have given me no choice but to stay, stay, stay.” 

This could be interpreted as romantic – he’s so wonderful that she has no choice but to stay. But it could also read as “you’re not allowing me to leave” or “I have no other choice; I have no better options.” 

An alternative interpretation is that she has no choice but to stay, because he’ll always stay with her and never leave, no matter what she puts him through.

At any rate, this is not good. This is a toxic situation. This is not “daydreaming of real love,” this is “daydreaming of” shitty everyday relationships that people often get stuck in.

Bridge: “All Those Times That You Didn’t Leave”

The bridge reads: "You took the time to memorize me My fears, my hopes and dreams I just like hanging out with you All the time All those times that you didn't leave It's been occurring to me I'd like to hang out with you For my whole life"

The bridge provides a bit more context. He “took the time to memorize me” means he learned her deepest “fears,” “hopes and dreams.”

But again, this is the bare minimum you should know about someone you’re in a loving relationship with. 

She likes spending time with him, but each time they fight and he doesn’t leave, she thinks they should be together forever. 

What’s important is what’s missing. His greatest quality, according to the lyrics, is that he stays. He carries groceries, and he stays.

Is that it? Is that all she needs to be happy? I doubt it. 

A person not leaving when you fight is not a reason to stay together. 

Final Chorus: “No One Else is Gonna Love Me When I’m Mad”

The final chorus is where we get the most information about her innermost thoughts: “no one else is gonna love me when I get mad.” She feels unworthy of a better, greater love. 

She’s settling for him, and he’s ‘good enough’ simply because he doesn’t walk away. 

I think there are a few possible interpretations of this. First, she has been so crushed by her previous love leaving (see the potent All Too Well, just a few tracks earlier on Red) that she just wants someone who will stay. 

The second is that just wants loyalty. Her ideal love is someone who doesn’t cheat on her, or leave her sad and alone. 

Either way, that sets a pretty low bar for Taylor’s love life. 

Is Stay Stay Stay About a Toxic Relationship?

So what’s the overarching message of Stay Stay Stay? Recall the hidden message: “Daydreaming about real love”. I propose that she is daydreaming of real love, in a satirical way. 

This isn’t her true dream of real love, it’s her dream of having the bare minimum. She’s been so flattened by her last relationship that it seems dreamy to just have someone be there, even to carry the groceries.

She’s traumatized – she thinks if she gets mad (see throwing phone), that he’ll walk away. She doesn’t think anyone can handle her. 

I propose that Stay Stay Stay isn’t about a toxic relationship – it’s about what a toxic relationship can do to you. She’s so down and out after her last breakup that her idea of “real love” is twisted and contorted.

She’ll move past this moment in time, but I think it’s an important note on where she may have been mentally at this point in her life.

Stay Stay Stay Meaning: Final Thoughts

This is a complex song, and it’s hard to get to the heart of what Taylor is saying. There’s a few different possibilities:

  1. This is her true ideal of “real love”: throwing phones, being made fun of for being mad. Just someone being there, not matter how good of a match it is.
  2. This is all satire and sarcasm. None of it is real. She’s poking fun at very low standards.
  3. Stay Stay Stay is a reflection of where she’s at mentally at this point in her love life, which is not a good place.

Any of these possibilities are realistic, but what’s not realistic is that Taylor holds herself in such low regard that this is her ideal love. We know she has way more self respect than that.

So what’s the message? I think it’s most likely a combination of satire and her real emotions. I think she’s been absolutely crushed, and Stay Stay Stay is her wondering if anyone (no matter who they are) will ever stand by her and not leave.
