Emotional Rollercoaster of the “Tied Together With a Smile” Meaning

Taylor Swift’s debut album from 2006 is full of adolescent heartbreak, tears, breakups, and rollercoasters of emotions. But one song hits particularly hard.

Tied Together With a Smile is a very heavy-hitting song for the then-15 year-old songwriter, and it feels so much more grown up than she was at the time.

Let’s look at the Tied Together With a Smile meaning by analyzing the lyrics, and see what it can tell us about Taylor’s early life and songwriting.

What was the Secret Message in Tied Together With a Smile?

The secret message was “You are loved.” You can see how fans got attached to Taylor so quickly when they discovered messages like these in the liner notes.

What is Tied Together With a Smile About?

This heartbreaking song is about self-image, self-perception, and struggling to come to terms with who you are inside and outside.

Taylor has said that this song was inspired by a high school friend who had an eating disorder.

“Every guy wanted to be with her, every girl wanted to be her,” she said. The lyrics are Taylor’s observations of this difficult mental and physical health journey, and what it means for self-image.

Tied Together With a Smile Meaning: Line by Line

The opening verse reads: "Seems the only one who doesn't see your beauty
Is the face in the mirror looking back at you
You walk around here thinking you're not pretty
But that's not true
'Cause I know you"

This verse begins speaking to an unknown subject (we can surmise it’s the friend she told us about in her song interview) in the 2nd person.

The lyrics begins with a focus on how this individual views themselves, particularly a disconnect between how they are perceived by others and their own self-perception.

“The only person who doesn’t see your beauty,” she says, “is the face in the mirror looking back at you.” This person can’t see what Taylor sees.

“You walk around here thinking you’re not pretty,” she says, “but I know you.” This person “walks around” their life thinking they aren’t beautiful, but it’s not true.

Why? “Because I know you.” This means that Taylor sees this person’s outer beauty (“pretty”), as well as their inner beauty (“beautiful”).

Chorus: “Hold on, Baby, You’re Losing it”

The chorus reads: "Hold on, baby, you're losing it
The water's high, you're jumping into it and letting go
And no one knows
That you cry, but you don't tell anyone
That you might not be the golden one
And you're tied together with a smile
But you're coming undone, oh"

The chorus emphasizes that the person is experiencing deep emotional pain and turmoil.

“Hold on, baby, you’re losing it” could mean they’re losing their grip on reality. But Taylor compares this to drowning as a ship goes down.

The water imagery and suggestion of drowning is important, and is a major theme throughout Taylor’s discography.

“The water’s high, you’re jumping in and letting go” could mean that this person is attempting suicide, or that they’re just going too far into their own delusions.

“No one knows that you cry,” she says, and “you don’t tell anyone that you might not be the golden one.” They’re harboring secret, deep-seated doubts about their worth.

“The golden one” is Taylor’s first use of “golden,” which will later become symbolic of being precious or adorned in songs like End Game and So it Goes…. But here, it means they’re not the “chosen one” – they might not be as special as they assumed they would be, or as others assume they are.

Then the most heartbreaking lines: “And you’re tied together with a smile / But you’re coming undone.” This person is only held up by their facade. They’re maintaining an outward image of happiness or normalcy, hiding their true feelings.

This reflects a huge theme in Taylor’s music: the societal pressure to appear okay even when you’re not.

Verse 2: “It’s Not His Price to Pay”

The second verse reads: "I guess it's true that love was all you wanted
'Cause you're giving it away like it's extra change
Hoping it will end up in his pocket (Pocket)
But he leaves you out like a penny in the rain
Oh, 'cause it's not his price to pay
It's not his price to pay"

The second verse begins with “I guess it’s true that love was all you ever wanted.” If there is any central thesis to Taylor’s discography, it’s this. So is this song really Taylor speaking to herself?

She’s “giving it (love) away like it’s extra change.” This person gives away her love like it means nothing.

She’s “hoping it will end up in his pocket,” meaning she randomly gives out love, simply hoping it will go to the right person. This naturally doesn’t work.

“But he leaves you out like a penny in the rain” means her love gets rusty, left out and abandoned.

The rain and rust imagery is a device Taylor will use often (“once was shiny but now is all rusted” from Bad Blood). Here combined with the coin (“penny in the rain”) imagery, it conveys both self-degradation (rust), as well as the “currency” of love.

“Cause it’s not his price to pay” is a really powerful way of saying that self-love is the only thing that matters. It’s not his job to make you feel valuable or loved – the only person who can make yourself feel that way is you

Final Chorus: “Goodbye, Baby”

The chorus repeats, but this time we get the sense that it’s a “fearless” jumping in. She may have ‘lost the plot’, but she’s going with it; diving in headfirst and will see what happens.

She’s tied together with the delicate thread of her smile – her image, maybe? – but it’s coming undone.

Then the outro reads: “Goodbye, baby, with a smile baby.” What is she saying goodbye to?

It could be a real or metaphoric death, but it feels more like letting go of the demons that plague you. She’s now diving in, saying goodbye to everything that came before, and letting go of the old haunting thoughts.

Or so I hope. And I do hope that Taylor’s friend who inspired the song got the help she needed.

Tied Together With a Smile Meaning: Final Thoughts

This is a haunting song, and it’s an incredible piece of songwriting for a 15 year-old to have accomplished. We can see pieces of Swift coming together that we’ll see over and over in the water imagery and metaphors, the longing for success, the self-doubt, and the encouragement.

This song is often overlooked on Taylor’s discography, but I for one am very excited to see how she reworks this for Taylor’s Version of Debut.
